Issue:
So right to the point. Several weeks back the car started developing a kicking back issue and it has been getting worse. Here's exactly how it occurs.
-Turn on the ignition
-Car starts no problem
-Idols between 750-900 rpm, smooth idol
-No other knocks, whines or other problematic sounds or vibrations.
-Put car in revere to exit driveway, no issues as it backs up into street.
-I Put the car in drive and turn the wheel to turn left and press the accelerator, The car begins bucking, the rpms surge to 2000 and rapidly regress to 1000, this occurs multiple times in a rhythmic pattern while accelerator is pressed until the transmission shifts to 2nd gear. The kickbacks are quite strong if accelerator is pressed firmly, less severe if gently accelerated, but the exact same pattern remains. Struggles to accelerate like power is being robbed from the engine.
-Driving from second gear on through to overdrive, so 20mph and up, The problem does not occur. Problem also does not occur with reverse as I have backed it up at 15 mph with no issue.
-Problem initially started only when turning from a stop and predominately only when turning left, over time left and right turns became equally severe and now even driving straight from a stop can cause the bucking and surging of varying severity, but slowly it is getting worse. There is no issue turning while driving 2nd gear or higher. drives at highway speeds 85mph with no issue, smooth acceleration beyond 1st gear.
-Also Early on if I sat in the driveway and turned the wheel back and forth through its full range for a minute and then started driving it would lessen the effect.

Possible issues and remedies taken so far:
-Initially I believed it might be a failing power steering pump as the issue only occurred when turning and was worse when turning left which is farthest from the pump and as such placing the most strain on it, I felt that the pump might be dragging on the engine causing it to struggle and rob acceleration. However I no longer believe this to be the problem as the car steers fine after first gear and their are no noises coming from the pump. I also topped off the resivoir as it had gotten to low, this provided no change.
-Researching led to the PCV. The codes showed a recirculating emissions issue and sure enough the PCV was shot. I figured this might be causing the problem. I replaced it and while it made the code go away and helped improve the idol and acceleration a bit, the main problem was unaffected.
-I then pulled out the sparkplugs and replaced them. The Idol is now much smoother then it was, as the old plugs were worn out. However No change to the main problem.
-The engine shows no codes.
-Transmission was drained and filled with appropriate fluid and a bottle of Lucas Trans fix less then 4000 miles ago. Old fluid was not burnt. Trans ran better after the change.

So what now?:
So that's the gist of it. I have replaced a lot on this car in the two years i have owned it and it has run great until this issue cropped up. I would suspect a problem with the transmission, however the symptoms don't correspond with the usual trans signs. It's not slipping gears, there are no codes. And though the gear shifts even before this issue arose were noticeable with a single knock sound when it engaged, and it's a 25 year old trans so not unusual. The horse kicking also emanates more from the passenger front of the car when it happens. It feels like the engine and trans are fighting against something to make it to second gear, and now and then it will vanish. I'll come to a red light and then accelerate with no issue, If it were the gears or bands you would expect a constant to the pattern regardless of outside influence, I mean a gear or band thats damaged isn't going to magically decide " Lets work just for this acceleration.". Yet every time i start the car and try to drive it happens. is it possible its the power steering pump? Can it go bad in a way that doesn't cause weak turning and noises? So any thoughts. I would greatly appreciate it.
