You might try this. Take a piece of writing paper ....reach down to the bolt head with the paper in your hand. Place the paper flat on the bolt head and RUB...the head of the bolt. You should be able to create a "shadow" image of the head of the bolt. Measure with distance across the flats with a metric rule.
