what does the etc pwr indicator lite mean on the dash of 1996 Toyota Camry

Asked by HILFC May 26, 2013 at 02:43 PM about the 1996 Toyota Camry DX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a used 1996 Toyota Camry.  Among other things, following recommendation
of my mechanic I have had the transmission flushed and fluid replaced.  The fluid was
very dirty, looked brown.  Other than the fluid looking brownish the car was running
fine.  One week after changing the trans fluid my indicator light came on the dash "etc
pwr".  This happened last night.  I have only driven it one short 4 miles distance since
the warning light and it drove fine.
Thanks for any help!

According to the manual, it changes the operation from "Fuel Efficiency" to "Powerful" mode. I don't know exactly what the acronym stands for but when used it revs the engine to a much higher rpm before shifting. There is a button between the driver and passenger seat you can turn it on/off, it's not a 'warning' light

Like DavidH25 said; it's like an "over drive" mode -fuel efficient and a "non- overdrive" mode -power. You can switch between one and the other as you need. But Toyota likes to run in the fuel efficient mode as a rule normally. The light is a indicator as to which mode your are in. Good Luck HTH

It's an indicator for the Electronic Transmission Control, it changes how the transmission behaves to give you power or fuel economy. Had one on my old 86' Camry. It's supposed to be on all the time to let you know which mode you're in. Must have had a miracle where it turned on after the oil change or the trans computer reset itself. You should see a button next to the shifter saying the same thing. Should look something like this.

Thank you, too! Pictures are worth a thousand words! the extra effort was thoughtful of you. I have never used CarGurus in the past. Sure glad I found you! I have a feeling this '96 Toyota will present more questions in the future. For now, question answered. Mahalo to all who responded!
