If the timing belt on my 1996 toyota camry is broken, if i tried to start it still would there be any spark getting to the spark plugs ?

Asked by Rapoper56 Apr 02, 2017 at 09:27 AM about the 1996 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1996 Toyota Camry stopped running while i was driving it. It had a loss
of power first then the oil light came on and about 50 yards later it turned iff
and the check engine light came on. I pulled over and parked and tried to
start it back up but it would only crank over but wouldn't start. I had it towed
home. While cranking it over there is no power getting to the spark plugs.

Take a look at the link I provided. It could be the timing belt or something else. I would recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic for evaluation.

If this engine has a distributor cap, take the cap off and see if the rotor spins. If it does not spin then you will not have spark and the timing belt is bad. Also depending on the size of this engine the 2.2L Gasoline is Non-Interference, 3.0L Inline 6 (Except 1998 2JZ-GE) Non-Interference • 3.0L Inline 6 VVT-i (1998 2JZ-GE) Interference • 3.0L V6 Non-Interference Engine.

So...considering the above info....what engine is in this vehicle?
