How do I shut off the check engine light?  My car runs perfectly, yet the check engine light stays on or flashes.  The smog check machanics won't run the smog test if the check engine light is on.

I already answered your other post, but to add to that, the car might be running ok, but there could still be an issue that needs addressed.. see what codes are associated with the light. if you have fixed it and then nothing turns up, then have someone with a scanner shut it off.

I had that problem with my 99 4 cyl Corolla. . I had to replace everything recently relating to the smog system before the check engine light came off. There is no easy fix that I am aware of. The system was found to be filled with gasoline. The mechanic advised me to never overfill the gasoline tank but to remove the gasoline filler hose from the tank once you have added gasoline and the pump automatically shuts off. I assume he knew what he was talking about. It was an expensive fix. The check engine light can be temporarily turned off but after a short while it will come back on if the system is not performing correctly.
