1998 camry v6 will not engage in drive at times

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son's 1998 Camry V6 LE gear shifter is giving him problems, when he shifts out of reverse to drive the car transmission will not engage in drive. He has to shift back to park then drive before it engages. Other times he has to shift from park to drive 2 then back then back to regular drive before engages. Could the cable where the inside console gear shifter have a bad connection like some very loose bolt or clip or some type of bushing?
