It could be way too many things to list here, so I'll list a few but I'd recommend getting it checked out by a mechanic. You should have a diagnostic check performed on the car, the cars computer should tell you exactly what is wrong (Autozone does it for free). Check to make sure the thermostat isn't broken or stuck closed. Check the water pump damaged or leaking. Check the engine temp sensor. Those are just 3 of many possible issues.
Lets put it this. I have a toyota camry 1997 2.2 liter 4 cylinder. It has 300k miles on it. I replace water, temp sensor, fan switch (which is located at the bottom of the radiator), thermostat. I have changed out everything but sending unit (which is located by the temp sensor, it's the little wire the plugs in the sensor directly next to the temp sensor next to the cylinder head). I have replaced everything but the sending unit and the ecm computer (the computer the runs everything). If I was you I would replace everything! The radiator, temp sensor, the sending unit, thermostat, the computer. overheating is a big issue. Overheating just a little bit can cause the head gasket to out. (I bought this car at 299k miles, and it came like this). So take it from me. Replace what you can. It will be worth it. I just replaced the head gasket thinking it will fix this issue. and it still continues to overheat and high idle. I have replaced a lot of stuff on this car but nothing helps. The only thing I did was restore the high compression it give and stop coolant from leaking into the cylinders. It's a real problem when it overheats as you can blow the head gasket and destroy the engine you don't get to it in time. This goes for anyone with a toyota camry 4 to 6 cylinder 97 to 01!
I have 1995 camry toyota it steaming by over flow put antfreeze in radiator and still doing it smell hot but gage not moveing
