Camry stalling when coming to a stop and losing all electrical power

Asked by Esp092002 Aug 25, 2016 at 01:36 AM about the 2000 Toyota Camry CE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car has stalled out while almost coming
to a complete stop at a red light twice in
the last two weeks. The first time seemed
to be only a second and started back up
after I stepped on the gas and the second
time as I was pulling up to my house. I put
the car in neutral and it started right up.

What Engine.....what is the mileage? It might be time to service the Throttle Body. Is the Check Engine Light ON when the Engine is running?

Have your charging system tested, your alternator may be failing to keep the battery charged. Even a running car requires a working charging system.

The car is a 4 cylinder and has 177,000 miles on it. The last stall I had to reset the clock on the dashboard but the radio presets were ok. I just replaced the catylic converter and replacing the O2 sensor this weekend.

Ok....I would start the Diagnosis with a digital Volt Meter and a Scan Tool. The DVM will provide insight of the Battery/Cranking/Charging Systems at work while this issue surfaces. The Scan Tool will provide valuable info concerning Computer Inputs/Outputs and stored trouble codes. Let's assume you do not have these special diagnostic tools. A visual Inspection of the throttle body could be performed by someone with mechanical ability. A Cleaning of same could also be performed. Procedures for same for your make model year should be available on line for free. So...are you up to attempting to diagnose and repair this vehicle yourself?

Check Battery Terminals for corrosion. That Digital Volt Meter could pinpoint this problem using "Voltage Drop Tests"
