Feels like someone is hitting the brake

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2000 Toyota Camry 6cyl does good in town but if i'm driving say 55 mph occasionally it feels like someone is hitting the brake. The same feeling as if I was driving with the cruise control on and it slows the car down. But I don't use cruise control or the emergency brake. Seems to have become more often then it was at 1st. I don't hear anything grinding or unusual sounds. Sometimes are worse then others it can feel like that and lose maybe 5mph then go back to normal after a few seconds others... I have lost 10mph the whole front end feels like its gone down and a brake was it and it veers to the right. I drive my kids in this car and I really need to figure out whats wrong.

Can you jack up on of the front wheels and move the tire side ways and up and down if it does you have suspension front end problems

My Toyota 4x4 did the same thing. I pulled over and the left front brake was smoking. My problem was a bad master cylinder. You may have the same problem, or your front caliper may be hanging up. The slides may be gunked up with corrosion. If slides get dirty, it will cause the brake to drag and not return when the piston lets off. Another problem could be that your piston is going bad and it stays pushed against your rotor causing it to pull and feel like it's dragging on one side. If not planning on fixing it yourself, I would tell the shop to replace the caliper and pads on the side that you feel is bad. That will cover the slides, piston, and pads. If problem persists, I would then suspect a master cylinder issue.
