Sounds like it's in "limp mode", the engine computer is limiting RPMs to protect the engine from further damage. It needs to be diagnosed, you should be setting one or more OBD trouble codes. So check for codes. Limp mode can be caused by any number of things, from cam, crank, or knock sensors, timing chain, etc. If no codes, might be problems with the transmission or torque converter.
