Oil leak on passenger side of the engine in Toyota Camry 2002 4cyl.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hi everyone,
I have a 2002 Toyota Camry with 150k miles on it. Recently, I mentioned an engine oil
leak which is pretty bad. The engine lost 5QTR in a week. The first mechanic told me it
is valve cover gasket and I replaced it, but the oil leak did not stop, so it is not valve
cover gasket. The second mechanic told me it is the head gasket that is leaking, but I
don't trust his judgement as I have the oil leak even when the engine is off (I guess),
because I see good amount of oil in the garage. Do you guys have any clue that what it
might be that is leaking? All responses will be greatly appreciated.

Well, first, congratulations, not everyone even makes it to 150,000 miles. So, you're really surprised by all this, really? OK, why don't you trust your mechanic? I would take the car for a second opinion, but, if the next person tells you something similar, it's probably true. Look, after 150,000 miles, it's entirely possible that these things are happening to your car and its a 2002. You should be satisfied with the service you've gotten from this automobile. If you wrote that you only had 100,000 miles on your car, I could see how you might feel differently. It's always less expensive to just repair the car and get more mileage from it to 200,000 or so, then trade or sell it. Even a major car repair like this is not the same as spending $400 per month every month for the next 60 months to buy a new car. So, repair your car, it's probably your best option. Besides, your car is not worth anything if it's not in working condition.
It may be your oil pump drive seal. That's a common leak on Camrys. If it's leaking from the timing belt cover area, that's most likely your issue. On rare occasions, like Tom suggested, the block will crack but that's usually due to a broken motor mount. Here's a video on the oil pump leak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT6D042Czww
Engine needs to be power washed or otherwise cleaned so it can be determined where the oil is coming from. Could be coming from oil pan gasket, oil filter and adapter, oil pressure sender, oil pump, crank shaft seal, valve cover gasket, head gasket, cylinder head or block. Engine block, I would think, would be least likely, but possible.
If it's leaking from the oil pump seal, it will still leak because it's filling up the plastic timing cover with oil as well. It will continue to leak out of the timing cover until it has finally drained out. So, yes, it will still appear to leak once the car is off.

Thank you very much guys for the thoughtful responses. I am very satisfied with the service this car provided to me and have no complaints. I am recently moved to a new place, so I don't know mechanics here very well. I will update you guys, when I figured out the problem for sure.

So you never found out you're oil leak? Lol
Exact same problem, 2003 Camry. Changed valve cover gasket, VVT solenoid, Timing cover seal, spent about $1000 so far, still the same large leak. Any other ideas?161000 miles

I have a 2003 Camry with 143K miles. Toyota dealership said there are multiple leaks including valve cover gasket, transmission pan, and possible timing cover leak (they recommend a clean off and dye?). I had them repair the valve cover gasket, and am waiting on the others, not sure when I should proceed with the others. Any ideas how long I can wait?
My leak is still not traceable. I and my mechanic have given up. Loses about a quart in 15 days. You may have to follow the dealer's advise to correct all of these and you may still have a leak. I am now suspecting a cracked block, since every other avenue has been explored.
Own a 2004 Camry. Timing cover seal was my oil leak problem. Was able to solve.
Take your radiator cap off & start car. If the coolant is bubbling than most likely it is your head gasket.

@ Markw1952: Just WOW. How have you remained so sheltered that you feel 150k on a Camry is anything other than NORMAL?
@ Markw1952 gave the stupidest answer I have ever seen on a forum. Since when does 159k miles on a Toyota is not normal, let alone the Camry one! If you can't give any idea, just stay away from such a useless and baseless comment.
@ Markw1952 must drive a Chevy or Ford! ;)
None of u idiots can read ,why don’t u idiots go back an read the past post be4 you go shooting ur mouth off looking like a dumbass
It's your oil pump gasket mine did same think I have 575k and not a drop oil since I did the gaskets on oil pan pump and valve covers even tho they wasn't leaking the rear is knowing but it's def oil pump gasket I left motor medic in the oil to long and it ate the gasket. Head gasket you would have coolant in your oil and smoking so much you'd fill the whole area up.. mustang blew twice and each time smoked like a freight train
I have 567k never any big problems beside gasket over letting somebody use the car and they decided put some addictive in oil and ate gaskets. People don’t know how leave people stuff alone and just drive or ask before you mess with somebody car but on another note would be your oil pump gasket just get under clean it around timing cover and oil pan but leak is probably oil pump gasket
My 2001 Solara is leaking from the PVC base on the valve cover port. I just got blessed with the car as a gift. It does have 242k miles. I will replace the plastic PVC with a metal one. Also, add Lucas oil stabilizer, to release any stuck parts and clean valves. I was told to add transmission fluid to clean the engine, old school repair. Will keep you posted. 904 405 4994.

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry 2.2L 135K mi. It's leaking oil behind the engine. I think it is from the plugged hole that was for the distributor shaft on in previous years. It is very hard to get to. Mechanic said several hundred $$$ to fix. If i could get to it, I may try J B Weld.

North american manufactured 2AZ-FE 2.4L (2002-2009?) may not make it to 150k miles before oil starvation from accelerated consumption destroys it. JDM built 2AZ-FE's did not have this problem. Aging 2AZ-FE leaks oil from; valve cover gasket, oil pan sealant, timing chain cover sealant especially areas where it meets joints in engine like head gasket and where 2 piece block join, recently discovered the gasket on the timing chain tension can allow for leaks, this part cannot be accessed without removing the intake manifold and moving engine electrical harness. easier said than done, engine is out of car to inspect for leaks on timing chain cover sealant and facilitate sealant replacement.
