A 20 year old car with 168K miles and a bad title? About 4 cents a pound.
Get a vehicle history report such as Carfax. Find out when the rebuilt title was issued. If not that long ago retail value isn't effected much because the vehicle isn't worth much to begin with and it was probably minor damage that caused the insurance company to total the vehicle. However, if the rebuilt title was issued many years ago much more substantial damage occurred for the insurance company to total it and you don't want it! Especially if there's been multiple owners since the rebuilt title was issued! Jim
It's a crapshoot buying a car with a rebuilt title, especially if you want to sell or even give it away later. Depending on what state you're in and their laws, it is always means for being pulled over due to clerical issues at the DMV or due to the car's past. Even weirder is you may one day get pulled over by a bad cop who's dying to impound the car or put you in the slammer over the almost certain "claimed" clerical issue they'll have on their end. Many people have been incarcerated and even died at a cop's hand over clerical issues in some states, like WV. Sorry if it sounds like I'm being paranoid. Just understand the ramifications of a non-clear title.
I'm not sure about all that, Dbf. A rebuilt title means the vehicle has been declared a total loss by an insurance company. A salvage title is then issued. Then someone repairs the vehicle to make it roadworthy again. In my State the vehicle is inspected at a State Police facility. Every receipt for every new part that was put on the vehicle must be presented. Any used parts must also have a receipt, from the junkyard where the parts came from, and the VIN of the vehicle that the parts were removed from. Once all that documentation has been verified the vehicle is left at the inspection facility for the inspection which takes several hours. Once the vehicle passes inspection a rebuilt title is issued. The vehicle is then able to be registered to drive on the road again, or sold as a perfectly legal and roadworthy vehicle. There's nothing illegal about it and no reason to get pulled over. I think, maybe, where people run into trouble is when they use a clear title from another, similar vehicle, instead of going through the process I've explained above. In other words, using the title for one '04 Toyota Camry that has a clear title, and a different VIN for another '04 Toyota Camry that has a salvage title. If you happen to get pulled over and the police officer compares the VIN on your registration to the VIN visible through the windshield and they don't match, you have a problem. I've had officers do that once or twice when I got pulled over. Usually because I was in an older model vehicle and was young at the time. Police Officers will absolutely pull over a young person in an older model vehicle before anyone in a newer vehicle, especially if it's a high end vehicle. They think the person in the new Mercedes or BMW will fight any ticket with a high priced lawyer because they can afford to. That was one reason, after 19 years I got rid of my '93 Caprice. I was getting pulled over on a regular basis. There were also times, the officer would pull out behind me, zoom up on my back bumper for a minute or two (to run my license plate), then back off. But follow me the rest of the way to my destination, if it wasn't too far. Jim
James, I am 100% positive bad cops look for any reason to impound and shoot. Please ask me why, but be careful what you ask for. The answer should make you sick, especially when I tell you about my boss’s dog that was shot in the back seat of his church- going wife’s beautiful Nisssn van with their two kids after she was taken away in leg irons for a DMV clerical error. Nicest woman I ever met. Kids are permanently damaged. Dog wasn’t barking or showing aggression, just killed for being playful. Imagine if she had a salvage title subjecting life & limb every time she takes the kids to school. This is all I’m saying…. It’s quite possible!
