Question type: General

I have a 2005 Cavalier with a 2.2 engine that needs replaced.
Will a 1997 2.2 engine fit this application?

No. The 1997 engine is their older generation motor while the 2005 is their newer ecotech engine since 2000. You need to find some engine made after 2000. Look for a vehicle salvage from an accident, a reman engine, or have yours rebuilt. Whats wrong with your engine now?

Thank you sir for your information. The engine in it now has a severe knock that sounds like a connecting rod bearing. I was thinking it would be cheaper and easier just to replace the engine. Would it be possible to use the '97 short block and transfer the '05 head and sensors from the original engine to the '97 block? Thank you so very much for your answer, I very much appreciate it!

No. Its not possible as nothing will lineup properly. Your best bet is to drop the pan and see if you spun a bearing and how much damage was done to the crank journals. Sometimes you can just replace the bearings and get a few more years from the motor before it is toast as long as the mileage is low and the damage is minimal. If the damage is more then you really need to do some real work. If you can get away with new bearings change the oil pump, filter screen and oil as I'm sure its now full of metal fillings that can destroy the engine if it gets past the filter and pump. But your cheapest options would be to look for another 2000+ ecotec engine from an accident, or a short block from a local engine shop if its cheap and your current mileage is low (otherwise you'll need to have the heads reworked), rebuild it yourself, or try the bearing trick and use a slightly thicker fluid and some engine additives. If the knocking is really bad then the crank might be permanently and badly damaged beyond any simple fix.
