what can cause poor mpg on a 2004 camry i4

Asked by WVPOPS Jan 02, 2014 at 07:18 AM about the 2004 Toyota Camry XLE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I used to own a 2004 (with 79000 miles on it) Japanese built Camry I4 and now own a
2004 (with 132000 miles on it) US built Camry I4. Both run fine and nothing appears to
be dragging on the US built car; I got 28 to 30 mpg on  my drive to work and I can only
get 22 or 23 on this US built. Is there a difference in gearing or is something
mechanical wrong, I would think a mechanical problem to cause this big of a difference
would set a light.

Were you putting ethanol gas in your old one, or the good old ethanol free? Ethanol gets poorer milage than regular gas. It is also the dead of winter (depending on location). Cars get poorer gas milage during the winter months. If you were driving your old car during the summer and comparing it to the car you are driving now during the winter, your old car will seem to have the better milage. They also produce a winter "blend" and a summer "blend" gasoline. Not sure if that will change milage or not...... But on another completely different angle, I have always felt that the U.S. built cars have been "tweaked" to purposely get worse gas milage than the ones not built here.
