1999 Toyota Camry/Solara V6 3.0L

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
OK I have never posted on anything like this, so I'm
going to try to give you guys all the information I
can.
I have a 1999 Toyota Solara 3.0 V6 it has 225000
miles on it. For the last week or so the problem
has gotten progressively worse. I drive anywhere
from 90-150 miles per day. Mostly highway but I
do drive in the city as well. Basically when I am
trying to accelerate (more on the highway) the car
will kind of sputter and act like it is running out of
gas or something it just doesn't have any power
but normally when I downshift and get the RPM up
2700+ it will drive fine then I'll just shift a little later
than normal, but for the last 2 days when I did that
it would start smelling really bad like something
was burning. I didn't have a check engine light on
but I took it to my local auto parts store they got
the codes and said it was the 02 sensor I bought
the part replaced it in the parking lot and it was
driving better still sputtering but not smelling on
the highway(it only would smell in 4th or 5th gear)
it has been 2 days now since I replaced the oxygen
sensor and it is still sputtering. If you have any idea
on what the issue could be any input would be
great. I avoid putting my car the shop by any
means I am just a diy guy I guess but I also don't
know much about cars.

achem...you're burning oil...don't you have to add a quart every 600 or so miles? I do believe that it's time for an engine rebuild, or to be fitted with sleeves to resurrect the existing vehicle~
Tyler- I agree with the last post, it's very likely that you're burning oil. Are you checking your oil regularly? Look, you have 225,000 miles on this car, and you should be thankful it's still running. Most cars can make it to 200,000 miles, then, things get a little harder. Are you prepared to ride out the "rough road" of repairs?
Honestly I really don't know if I want to continue to put money into it. I also really like this car it drives great until this. I have had to replace a few other parts in the last few months but nothing compared to a car payment. But what exactly would be involved in fixing the issue cost and time wise. Thanks you for your answers

Thank you for the response. Do you think there is any way to fix it. Even temporary
200K on a Toyota???? it just got broken in - its good for 200k more - This sounds like a maintenance issue to me - I'd say get the injectors flushed and clean the throttle body
well if you've got a handle on oil consumption...my 93 Toyota truck went 100,000 with maybe one oil change...at 120,000 the timing chain broke, and now with 170,000 just had a headgasket and timing cover replaced, because the destruction impaired the oil pump on the cover...so there is a little tick from the abuse of the 100,000 miles, but does not suck oil like someone who never does an oil change might have~
Tyler- let me see if I can help you out here. Why not consider that a new car payment is about $400 per month or $4,800 per year. I don't think it would cost $5,000 per year every year, so if you really like the car and it's in remarkable condition inside and out, it might be less expensive to just fix it and drive it for another 50,000 miles. From a strict economic perspective, it would actually save you money. The trick to keeping an older car is to repair EVERYTHING. That way, you'll have pride in your car and people will be amazed that you're driving an older car that spins like a top and looks great! I had an old 1995 Honda Accord, and I kept that car for 20 years. I wouldn't even recommend it had it not been a 90s Toyota. See this, you've got a remarkable year on your hands. Actually, the fact that your car has gone this far, is a pretty good prognosis for the future. What condition is the transmission in, original?? Even if you spent $3,000 on this car, it might not be too crazy AS LONG as you keep the car for 3 to 5 years. Can you do that without losing interest in driving the vehicle? http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/1999/Toyota/Camry-Solara- V6/Coupe-2D-SLE-V6/Values http://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Solara/1999/
Tyler- by the way, when I mentioned $3,000 , I was thinking in case you needed engine work?
PVC VALVE!!! it feed into cylinder 3, i do believe. fouling the injector!!! i just disconnected mine
I have a 2000 Toyota Solara and I have the same problem I thought I had bad gas but it wasn't I had to end up getting my spark plugs changed which one was broken in half and I had to replace two igniters and now the sputtering and feeling like your car is going to break down almost every single time you drive it is gone and I hope this helps some
I have same vehicle, same miles, same issue. ...my battery mounts were loose, thats all.
I have a 1999 Toyota Solara. I had a 2004 Highlander. I decided to get a vehicle , the Solara, that I could work on my self. The Solara, I fondly call, Pistol, is my last vehicle, . If I get my desire. I just got all the plugs and coils done. My local shop charged me about $900, for 4 new tires and the plugs and coils, it was like driving a brand new car!! I'd rather repair this vehicle then pay a note!!

I think I remember seeing this issue resolved on Toyota Nation's forum, you might give that site a try.
