My 2005 malibu chevy classic will not start. it has a smooth sound when starting , not cranking sound. What could it be?

Starters not engaging all you are probably hearing is the starter motor spinning... It will have to be inspected and maybe replaced

Bendix not getting pushed out to engage flywheel. Other words just what Tom said. Starter motor spinning but not catching gears from starter to flywheel. I think "Bendix" is a Trademarked term but has become the standard nomenclature for the pinion gear to extend out on a starter.
