top speed?

Asked by americanhero007 Jun 17, 2010 at 04:43 PM about the 1996 Toyota Celica ST 25th Anniversary Hatchback

Question type: General

So I was out today and I thought to try out my celica. I got her to about 110 and i had to slow down. My question is, what is the fastest you have ever gotten your celica to go? Also, what cars have you beaten in races? I am just wondering.

In 1982 My friends Vega did 99-97 we were on I 5 headed north from Vancouver washington to Tacoma and came upon a 1980 5 speed and it matched our speed as we got near it then I could see the guy shift into 5th and he slowly pulled away, my friend yelled f@#$%K were getting beat by a dam piece of s@#$%t Toyota! remember this was before Toyota was fast.

I had a 1977 Celica GT stock 2.2 5 speed manual. Books say top speed 110 is bull. Bet a buddy it would go over 110. Out on highway I said "look at the speedo" (it said 110) and I had 3 rpms left before red line. He said "ok you can slow down now" I said "not util you look at this" and I showed him the shifter. I was in 4th gear and still had one to go. I went 125 in it and didn't dare push it anymore but my calculations were it could do 160mph maybe more it I wanted to enter the red zone a few lines. At 125 it handled awesome like doing 80-90. Best little car I ever owned.

I know this is an old post but I'm curious about something. I've honestly never had mine past 75mph. It's a 97 st limited edition hatch back 5 speed. It's not that the car won't go faster it's that I'm scared to blow the engine. When I'm going 70 mph in 5th I'm a little over 3k rpm. It sounds like the engine is screaming so I don't push it any more. Can you cruise at 4 or 5k rpm indefinitely? Or could that damage the engine? It redlines at 5800 rpm.

Same question here. Not interested in top speed, but I'm regularly on the highway. Test drove a '89 Celica convertible 5-speed, and it looked like it was really huffing & puffing at 65mph in 5th -- my '06 Solara automatic is at 2100 at 70mph, and at 80 mph is still under 3k rpm.

That toyota can run at 5000 rpm for days with no problem!!! I had 2 ,1989 2.2l 5speed celica gts! They both would do 135 before even getting close to red line but that's all the gearing it had ! If I had another couple gears or just a huge 5th gear it would fly! Keep that car and they like to be driven fast!
