We have a 1992 toyota corolla that starts and cuts out after 5 seconds max. Don't know much about carb engines so not sure where to start. Someone suggested vacuum leak but how can I test for vacuum fIf it doesn't run?! Anyone had similar or got any ideas?

This is a tough one Caroline. I very much doubt it's a vacuum leak. Let's get some more information please. If you try to re-start does it do the same thing? Run for a few seconds then die? You have spark, or it wouldn't even do that, so that leads me to a fuel supply problem, and the first thing that comes to mind is fuel pump.

But I am confused about if you are sure that it's a 6A engine. In the 6th Generation (1987 to 1992) at least in North America that engine was not offered, the Corolla came with the 4A (carburetor) or 4A FE (Fuel injected) 1.6. The throttle body on a 4A FE very much looks like a carburetor though. Okay, now if it does have a carb, the float could be stuck not allowing the bowl to accept gas, sometimes a light tap with a 20lb sledge hammer--- JUST KIDDING!---- a light tap with the handle of a heavy screwdriver may loosen the float to sink and let the needle valve let gas in to the carb bowl. It seems like it's consuming what gas is in the carb but no more is coming in, either because of that, or no supply, meaning back to pump or relay.
Wish I could teach my wife this trick!
