Im a newbie at working on my car, how do i check and see if my air filter in my 95' Toyota needs changed?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is cutting out and overheating.I have a list of things to check.Air filter, it may need
fuel injector cleaner,fuel filter,spark plugs,spark plug wires fuel pump.I am stating at the
top of the list.Any help at walking me through this would be appreciated. Kinda like doing
a tune up myself I guess.

I just took it for another drive to see if I could notice anything else to help diagnose the issue.It seems I may have a much bigger problem.The car is cutting out and not wanting to catch up at all.Its like it is lagging,if that makes sense. Also the exhaughst is sputtering and rattling, along with the engine. Is it even fixable, or should I just invest in finding a used engine at a junkyard?

Tuned it up and that took care of the issue.Got some help from a really nice auto parts guy at O'Reileys.I basicly got to tune it up myself.It was fun.Pretty sure it was a faulty spark plug wire.
