1995 toyota corolla power steering system bleeding
I had a power steering hose replaced on my 1995 Toyota and now it has a severe whining
like there is no fluid at all. I asked the mechanic if it needed to be bled and he said that
there is no bleeder screw and these systems work the air out of the lines themselves by
driving the vehicle. Is this true?
Yes. After a few turns of the wheel the system will bleed it's self

You may have a bad pump though if it still groans
The pump was fine when I took it in. The leak was very small and fixed right away. Never let fluid get low. How long do you think I should drive it before worrying about damaging it?
Sorry for taking so long Yezbit, I had gotten up right after posting that. But anyway, a bad pump makes a distinctive growling noise, you probably know exactly what I mean, what sound that is. May I ask, when you took it in, do you mean off the car, or took the car in? It's very difficult to bench-test a P/S pump,and if somebody said they did either they have the proper equipment to spin it at 2000+ rpm, AND put it under load, or lied to you. Very few shops have that kind of testing equipment, probably only where they are rebuilt have it, and certainly not a parts house--- remember the pulley diameter is probably 2x bigger than the crank pulley, if the engine is idling at 1000 rpm the P/S shaft is turning at 2000 rpm. i.e. they spin fast. Even if it was still working, steering with ease, it could still be bad. This is a bit fuzzy, I had to make it bigger than the thumbnail it was--but it's a hydraulic pump-- steel gears-- that pump the fluid and begin to wear and not mesh properly. It may already be bad, but not damaged from you driving the car. How old is the pump?
