Can I put a transmission and motor from a
2006 Toyota Corolla in a 1996 Toyota Corolla

It wouldn't be a direct swap, you'd have check for any fitment issues then swap over everything the new motors needs, like wire harnesses, computer modules, transmission, exhaust and O2 sensors, maybe even the fuel pump module and instrument cluster moduels. 96 is right around when major changes were made to the OBD system and intakes, so lots of changes between those two motors.
