First, stop buying alternators! 1997 was the last model year the Corolla still used the 1.6liter 4A FE with an external voltage regulator. OK, it's possible there is a grounding issue, but a failed regulator will either cause the alternator to not produce at all, or cause it to operate at full output constantly, therefore getting hot and overcharging your battery, ruining it. I repeat, don't but another alternator unless it has already been damaged inside from overheating, Get a regulator and a new battery and I think your problem will be solved. If you have smelled an odd odor, similar to the odor of propane, that is your battery overcharging, and why it is weak. The regulator is attached to the alternator but not integral.
