2005 Toyota Corolla is not starting and also the transmission is slipping to all gears.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2005 corolla CE. Today when I came home and parked the car the
transmission got slipped and car came to neutral. The car was still running but the
transmission won't shift to park or any gear.... the shift is free like it goes to any gear
without any resistance. When I turned off the car, the car won't turn back on. The
breaks became hard. I had to pull hand break to keep the car in stop position. Battery in
brand new...... all lights come on when I move the ignition .... but no sound of engine or
click. I do hear some weak rattling sound when I move the ignition to ON from OFF or
from OFF to ON. Radio, break lights and other lights and A/C working perfect. Please
let me know what could be wrong. I tried hitting the starter but it won't start or go in any
gear. Please help.

sounds like the shift cable unhooked from the transmission lever either on the under hood trans top side or in the console area

but does it make the car not to start? It seems the computer of the car is at fault... while troubleshooting I also noticed that the steering is also very tight... It won't turn easy while in stop position.
Hi, I am facing exactly the same problem as Khalid mentioned. I want to what could be the problem. If its transmission cable then how much it cost? Tomorrow going to tow my car to Toyota repair center. Any help on this question is appreciated.

Divyesh, I got my car fixed by patching the cable with the shift. The original cost if I were to gone with the Toyota fix was about $600. But I paid my local mechanic $120 to reattach the wire with the shift. Just to make it clear, The wire it self was not broken but only detached from the shift. Hope it helps.
Hi Khaleed, For me too same issue.cable came out of shaft. Here in India they don't have that lock available separately so they asking me to replace entire cable. Can you pls share how your mechanic locked is back. Thanks

This was pretty easy. Take out the center console. It’s 2 10mm bolts inside the back of the console/compartment. 4 Philips screws under the plastic plate around the shifter. Disconnect 2 small wiring harnesses. Make sure the E brake is on and lift out the console. You’ll see the shift linkage on the right side (white plastic ring). Replace the bushing in the center of that and clean up the stud that it slides onto. Press it gently by hand onto the stud and replace everything for the center console. Took 5 minutes. I used Dorman part number 14103. It’s a 4 pack of bushings. You only need the wider black one. My transmission was stuck in drive which is the reason it wouldn’t start. Once you have access to the shifter cable you can move it to whatever position you need which I used to drive the car to Oreillys and installed that new rubber bushing in the parking lot in 10 seconds. Drove it back home and reinstalled the console
