How long does it take for a check engine light to reset itself, after a repair has been completed like changing gas cap and charcoal canister? What is the sequence the car goes through ?

Codes were to check EVAP system. So gas cap and charcoal canister replaced. Should we reset CEL or wait for it to clear? How Long?

There is much much more to the EVAP system than the gas cap and charcoal canister, click the image. Matter of fact the canister is the least likely to fail because it is a simple device with no moving parts that absorb gas fumes to prevent them from being released in to the air, and is purged upon startup with intake vacuum. You need to find what part did fail. Then you can remove the negative battery cable for about 20 minutes and if the problem is fixed when the cable is re attached the CEL will be off. OR if the CEL remains lit, either the fault detected by the OBD remains, or the you will need a code scanner to re set it where it's not on
