I was recently told that I need new struts and that replacing all 4 would be more cost effective.Is it reasonable to expect to replace the struts at this point in time?

There are extremes in the "strut replacement" theory world. The strut mfgs. suggest replacement every 15-30k miles; however, often times struts will last much longer and you may not need to replace any at all depending how your vehicle is riding/driving. Best way to check is to do a bounce test. Push down on the front or rear bumper on one side and observe if the vehicle "bounces" several times before stopping, or stops on the way up from the first bounce. If it goes several times, you need a new strut. Since they are normally replaced in axle-pairs, if one front strut is bad, you should have both front struts replaced. There's no specific need unless the vehicle is AWD to replace all four at the same time.
