Vac and check engine light came on after oil change and smoke under hood

Asked by Houston2013 Dec 24, 2013 at 05:54 PM about the 2005 Toyota Highlander Base V6 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I received an oil change at 4:30pm yesterday and drove 1/4 mile home.  I noticed a
strong odor assuming it was oil.  Today after driving 4 miles, I noticed the odor becoming
stronger smoke coming from under the hood.  I pulled into a parking lot and called the
shop.   I left the car in the parking lot for 2 hours before driving back to the shop.  No
smoke on the way back. Told to call on Thursday is it came back.   Driving away, more
smoke and the VSC check engine light came on.  Brought it back but no one qualified to
run a diagnostic.  Said it could be any of 2000 things and ok to drive.  Is it okay to drive?
What are the likely causes?

okay they've even got them available in colored anodized aluminum~ https://www.google.com/#q=2005+Toyota+Highlander+oil+cap&tbm=shop

to answer your question...NO it is not "okay to drive" put the cap back...check the oil level (probably not much left) and when you returned perhaps they out of embarrasment put it back without sayin' nothin'....probably the leak is gone because 17 year old technician put the cap back without sayin a thing...problem solved....a nasty letter could not possibly hurt~

I agree with judge. Not ok to drive. Check oil level. If you can't locate the issue I would have it towed to the shop. Then if it was thier mistake that caused it have them pay tow bill. Might want someone else to look at it to cause less than honest shop owners would never admit to making a mistake.

well my oil hose busted replaced $300 later with pipe line. No lights came on when I smelled smoke and engine oil all over the engine. see my previous posting. Get yourself a good mechanic and wait for the class action lawsuit
