thinking of buying a 2005 MR2S.  Never have heard or had experiance with a
SMT.  How reliable are they?

I don't know about reliability but the reviews I have read indicate that the SMT is sloooow. The upshifts make the car waaay slower than a regular 5 speed but the down shifts are good.

A good idea that was not ready for prime time. Did GM make this transmission?

have had one for 2 years and no problems. Shift not as fast as standard clutch, but OK. Downshifts are nice and easy, 0-60 a little slow but very adequate for driving in New Jersey. Vehicle is 100% dealer maintained

8-16-19: I (3rd owner) have had my 2003 MR2 with SMT for 7 years, currently at 67K miles (about 25K miles of my own) and so far no problems, knock-on-wood! I had the transmission fluid changed last year hoping that would Improve the slow up-shifting, -possibly, but nothing definitive. Only now that I’ve recently read some of the ‘problems with SMT’ posts, I cringe!! Am I lucky?? Are the car gods being kind to an old guy?? I don’t know. Carl in RI
