What would keep the 2 main brake lights from working while the 3rd is working?

1994 Toyota P/U 4x4, Brake lights not working in the tail light assemblies. The third brake light above the cab is working. Bulbs and fuse are good. What would keep the 2 main brake lights from working while the 3rd is working?

Corrosion mostly, in the plugins, bad wiring, bad ground, bad bulb sockets.

bad ground on bulb to socket -- clean with sand paper then use a dab of grease ---small dab on bulb
