Spits water back out was over heating when stopped

2005 Chevy equinox spits water back out  
and was running hot when I stopped but not
as long as I was driving.

What causes it to spit water back out at bottom when you put water In it. Was over heating sitting still but not as last night as driving. Is it water pump.
