2001 Toyota Rav4 with 245,000 Miles

Asked by GuruTXPBG Jun 24, 2018 at 12:08 AM about the 2001 Toyota RAV4 Base

Question type: General

I'm driving a Rav4 (bought used a year ago) that is running pretty well at
245,000 miles. However, sometimes the automatic transmission doesn't shift
out of 1st very well. I've read that this could be due to the ECU, which makes
sense because the check engine light is always on.
Two questions:
Would it be worth replacing the ECU?
Should I feel safe driving in the Rocky Mountains without addressing the
issue?

I read that this Rav4 model had a recall on the ECU, which I think would be a more affordable solution than the transmission, if the previous owner hadn't replaced the ECU yet. Also, I've had it scanned for the fault codes, and it's just an error.
