catalytic converter issues

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Check engine light tells us that it's the catalytic converter. We are moving from FL to CA. Is it worth the $1000 (ballpark, but close) estimate to repair it and will it pass a CA smog to be registered? Both O2 and Air Fuel Ratios Sensors (four total) were replaced about four months ago and engine replacement about the same time (previous owner did not maintain).
Thanks!

here in california theres aftermarket catalytic that are universal for all cars that will bass california smog and they run from 250 to 350 parts and labor
Hate to sound like a wise guy but i've never heard a check engine light say anything. Who made the diagnosis? $1000 sounds like a dealer estimated price. I have no idea what it takes to pass a Cali smog test but I'll guess your "cats" better be working. "Itaofvta" is onto something with the pricing. I live in PA but work in NJ. Laws in my old home state(NJ) are similar to Cali. I have a cousin who owns a custom exhaust shop there. He is very well respected and knowledgable. He typically charges $150-$300 for a universal cat installed. He would tell you that some vehicles will only do with the factory part as they can't be substituted.Best advice is to visit some installers and get opinions and prices
24bics...im also in new jersey and think i need a catconverter...can u tell me where your cousin is located?
