how do you open the rear hatch on a 2002 toyota sienna with a broken handle that does not work?

also need to know how to replace the handle on the rear hatch once i am able to open the door. thanks

You need to squeeze yer a$$ back there inside and disassemble all the internal plastic - most of it should be phillips screws and snap togethers. After the panel is off you find the rod going from the handle down to the latch and pull up on it. Replacement of the handle is a metter of a plastic clip and two small nuts. Good Luck

I have had this issue with both Siennas I had. This is the only vehicle I have ever seen that has no emergency latch inside the car that opens the door. Seems like this would be a standard, required safety item on a car. Specially 2000 and newer. Doesn't make sense, specially with the price. I wouldn't have gotten the 2nd one but I didn't get a vote at the time.
