Why does the check engine light stay on suddenly on my 2001 Toyota Tacoma SR5

For some reason my engine light came on and stayed on my 2001 Toyota Tacoma SR5.  
What could be the causes?

did you scan for engine codes? that is what the engine light is for. tells you if something is wrong, but you have to scan it to find out the code. autozone does this free.
