Should I take my truck to the dealer?

Asked by Chq94 Jun 24, 2020 at 09:36 PM about the 2002 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner Standard Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner v6 with the
codes P0420 and P0440. I took it to a mechanic
and had both the catalysts and Bank 1 O2 sensor
replaced but the codes won’t go away. The
mechanic said to go to the dealer because it’s a
problem with the computer not being able to
communicate with the O2 sensor, and that the
dealer has the right tools to fix a computer issue. I
know dealers are very expensive so should I take it
there or go to another mechanic for a second
opinion?

Before u do I would look in the owner's manual and see if there is a fuse that runs the heated O2 sensors and emission control. If u dont have the owners manual take each fuse out 1 at a time to find any blown fuses. On my 99 sable there is a fuse that runs both, got codes took it to the dealer, they put it on the computer ($80) and told me it needed all 4 O2 sensors and a new charcoal canister. Total estimate $850, it turned out to b a fuse.

Where's your gas gauge? The computer will not run the diagnostics on the catalyst or EVAP systems if the gas gauge is above the three quarter mark or below the one quarter mark. Keep your gas gauge between those two points and drive normally for a few days. Then if the check engine light remains on I'd take it to the Dealer. Hope that helps! Jim
