Can you drive on engine power alone?

Asked by DaleW59 May 26, 2013 at 02:29 AM about the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My wife's Highlander Hybrid battery pack died. The engine was running fine until then.
Now lots of lights on dash, engine won't start. If it could be jumped, could it be driven?

The engine itself may work, but if the battery is not working, all electronics will stay inoperative. Best bet would be to buy a new battery pack. Hope this helps!

No. The drive motor is what starts the engine. Toyota hybrids don't have a conventional starter, so the 12v system won't start the gas engine. The 500v drive battery pack needs to be fixed for the car to drive again.
