You are MUCH better off structurally and financially buying a used transmission out of a wrecked car. When shops rebuild them, they use the cheapest parts they can find, and the rebuild doesn't usually last more than a couple of years. There are hundreds of used transmissions on Ebay to be bought for $500 or less for most cars. Installation shouldn't be more than $800.
