Timing chain

My friend is having major work done on his 1990 420SEL because he didn't replace the timing chain. He said it should be done every 75,000 miles. Is this true? I just bought a 1990 300SEL with 88,000 miles. I'm not sure if the chain was ever done.  Should I have it replaced so I don't go through what my friend is? Any information would appreciated.

Yes, it should be done. 75,000 miles seems a bit too frequent; most are done every 100k miles.
