Why can't I switch to the next gear in my Mercedes 300E

When I drive the car it move in first but when
it's time to switch to second it never switch
over.

You should have someone look at it, could be several different problems like a bad brake master cylinder & slave, or the sync-rows in the trany, or possible worn out linkage parts.
