How can I unlock my rear end doors?

Asked by migration_ajsmomma Jun 23, 2011 at 05:10 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 Z71 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have two doors on the rear end that will not unlock.  It is very frustrating.  This causes the suburban to be used in a limited fashion.  I can not haul groceries in the back.  I can not haul large furniture.  We also use the suburban to tow our camper.  Its just not useful like it once was.  I'm debating on how to fix it or just get a newer one.

i asume fuses are good and key wont work either. only other option i can think of is to pull the inner panel and check the linkage for the lock. the only thing that holds it on the latch is a plastic clip. good luck

I have had this same problem before, if you have the barn doors on the back, then unlock them with the key hole by the handle on the door with the key (you know, how we used to do it before key fobs) then if you look up by the roof with the doors open, you will probably see these little metal tipped things sticking out that would touch flat metal squares on the door if it were closed, clean all of them off with cleaner and some steel wool or other abrasive thing and make sure they move freely as they are spring loaded, then clean off the metal squares on the door in the same fashion. this should restore current to the door's locks and defrosters. if this did not work, then you likely have a bad door actuator motor, which isn't too bad to fix.

Sound to me like a bad actuator gm has a lot of problems with door lock actuators.

I took the doors off the hinges. The lock had rusted, so I sprayed with lube and took a screwdriver and hammer to open the lock. After cleaning up the lock put the doors back on. Works fine now
