Hi motorhead, This type of engineering is very common in motor vehicles of every manufacturer - including Mercedes-Benz. It's sometimes assumed that everything will work as designed without being thoroughly thought out and/or tested. It could also be that there are multiple feeding points connected to the same fuel pump. One leading to the left side and one leading to the right side of the "saddle bags". Hope this helps!

I have a 1995 mercedes c class, the car will not start when the fuel tank is half full. the saddle fuel tank is full on one side, and the fuel gauge indicates half full. You add few liters and then it is ok. fuel pump is ok, fuel guage is ok. Changed the fuel tank with a good condition used one, but it turned out to have the same porblem. I doubt this second fuel tank has exactly the same problem?? anything need to be done during installation of the tank. how does the fuel get transfered from one side of the tank to the other side???? I appreciate any help on this issue.

The 2003 C230 uses the return fuel to initiate a siphon from the left tank to the right. If there is not adequate return flow the siphon tube will not fill and the left tank will be full and the right empty. The right fuel pump is week or the siphon venture may be damaged or clogged.
