Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 1995 Mercedes C280, it is an excellent car and never had any major problem with it except for when the key started getting to get stuck and would not turn to start. This problem has been occurring quite often. What really coold be the problem ?

I have a 1999 C280, I am guessing the 1995 model does not have the key fob or blade ( as they call it) but a regular looking key instead. The problem you describe here is similar to what I had with my 1994 Jetta. The cause of my problem was a build up of dirt in the key tumbler. here is how I solved it. I would put a little WD 40 on my key insert it into the key hole and work it in and out, I would wipe the key off periodically and apply fresh WD 40 and repeat. It removed the dirt build up and lubed the mechanism at the same time. It never happened again after that. Try it and let me know how it worked out. DON'T spray the wd 40 into the key hole, ( it has electrical connections in it) just onto the key.
Any time you are lucky enough to get advance warning of this type, do not hesitate. Why? because to do anything to a MB ignition lock, as lock cyl.removal, steering lock and even the electrical plug on the back, you must be able to turn it to position #1. When this becomes imposible you are screwed. Meaning much more labor and parts to replace. What you need to do while you can still turn it is follow the instructions and remove the lock cylinder with it in your hand you can work it and usually determine if the problem is the lock cylinder or lies in the steerig lock. I have had many customers come in with a car where they have to jiggle the key, etc, and warned them, some answer, "oh it's been that way for a long time and I know how to work it" only to call some time later (maybe months) and say my key won't turn. Now what was a simple repair turns into a big job, with lots of components having to be removed and drilling involved, and all 3 parts replaced, lock cyl.,steering lock and ignition switch, you have been warned!
