Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1996 Mercedes Will start fine but when I shift
into drive the car will not move when I push the gas
it just acts as if it is in neutral and makes a huge
knocking sound. What could this be?

It's gonna be the prop shaft. At each end (gearbox and differential) is a rubber ring which over time is prone to disintegration and this is where you're problem will be. It's a common problem and a fairly cheap fix. Much less likely and much more expensive could be a failed differential. The chances of the problem actually being the gearbox itself is unlikely given that you described a knocking /banging, my money is definitely on the prop shaft coupling.
