Odometer not working
Asked by Jay4u2nv Feb 25, 2018 at 12:53 PM about the 1996 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 280
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
What can cause the odometer to stop working? The rpm gauge works just fine
but the speedometer isn't working. Is there a fuse that needs to be replaced or
is there another fix around this problem?

A very common problem on the older Mercedes. There is a gear inside the instrument cluster that ends up sliding back on a small steel shaft just enuff to stop engaging. If you are mechanically inclined at all, not too hard to fix once instrument cluster is out. Just need a little super glue.
There is a fuse for the instrument cluster, but it makes the whole cluster turn off, not just one gauge. What you describe could be an issue with the speed sensor that sends the signal to the cluster. I would recommend you take a look at this guide if you are still having this problem. https://www.youcanic.com/wiki/mercedes-benz-instrument-cluster-odometer-problems
