Lifter tick

Asked by gewop Aug 17, 2018 at 12:29 PM about the 1998 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 280 Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I bought a 1998 Mercedes c280 for $1000
about 3 months it had a REALLY loud lifter tick
when I got it but ran and drove fine.... I got it home
did a oil change it had nasty oil and way to much
oil. it filled a 5 gallon bucket up a little over half
way. and I put some random oil (5w-30)  I had
laying around but put seafoam in  it ran it for about
50 miles and drained it and out the right oil in it
and it sounded alot quiter but still noisy. haven't
done much else to it but a new belt and water
pump.. but the car still sounds like a Old diesel
engine.

Try adding some Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer to oil worked for me when vehicle had a tapping. Do not over fill.

Once you’ve made sure that you’re not hearing the vibrations of loose metal, a quick check of the valve train will tell you if there’s something physically wrong with one of the parts. If not — it’s likely that a flushing agent and an oil additive added to the fresh oil will do the trick and silence your lifters.
