About buying a used car

Asked by Mali1738 Jun 06, 2017 at 01:54 PM about the 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 320 Wagon

Question type: General

I'm looking into buying a used car. I found a 1998
e320 Mercedes-Benz wagon for sale for a good
price. It has 180,000 miles on it. The owner is a
older man who lives in ft. Lauderdale beach. Says
he's selling it because he's moving too Europe and
can't take the car with him. He's asking $1,000 for
the car. He says it runs and drives excellent. What
should I look for when I go check the car out and if
there's anything wrong with the car, how expensive
are they to fix? Thank you please call or text me
back whenever you get a chance.

That is cheap. You could drive it for a few months and then scrap it out and come out OK on the deal. If you don't drive much this car might last you for years. These cars are expensive to repair so be prepared for big repair bills or just junk it when something big happens.

If Florida requires a smog inspection to transfer title make sure it passes before buying!

Nice looking car. Take it for a long test drive and have it inspected by a Mercedes mechanic.

Mali1738-. Yes, a smog check would be perfect...but, $1,000 for this car is NOTHING... go for it... And, it appears to have been well taken care of... I'm not going to bring up any "dark clouds" about the age of this car... Mercedes Benz is known for quality automobiles. If you need a set of inexpensive wheels, this looks like a nice ride. You can find independent mechanics who work on Mercedes...

When I test drive it or go to see the car. Are there any main things I should look for? Thank you for all your answers they have been helpful.

Make sure everything works and I mean EVERYTHING as small bits that don't work could cost more than the price you pay for the car. Make sure it does not overheat and that the oil pressure is good. The transmission needs to shift well and not slip. Use the AC and heater to make sure they work.

Operate all the windows and door locks and look for rust under the car but I suspect this car has little to no rust.

Drive over some bumpy sections of road to test the suspension and look at the tires to see if they are worn funny.

Actually, the price he is asking is right around what he would get on a trade in....see this below for information ... too bad it's not diesel. http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/1998/Mercedes-Benz/E- Class/Sedan

A car that old will only get a trade in value roughly equivalent to what a junk yard would offer.

I am recommending what I would do if I were buying it. I don't drive junk and I don't believe in sinking thousands into an old car like this so yes I expect darn near everything to work. If the buyer later finds something that does not work that they can't live without then the car is no longer a good deal and it becomes a money pit.
