failed ballance shaft on a 2006 e350 rwd

i have a 2006 E350 RWD 4 door sedan I was into the throttle pretty heavy and I believe I lost the teeth on the balance shaft there was a giant cloud of white smoke and it is like it has no compression my question is would it be better to fix my motor or buy a replacement motor

it has duel overhead cams the sprocket that turns the cams I believe has failed I thought it was a common problem with this model
