check engine light and no power

Asked by karen Mar 20, 2007 at 08:16 PM about the 1994 Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 320

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a car in California and drove it back to Michigan....ran fantastic.
Now when I start the car, idles at 1300 rpms, when I step on the gas it goes to 1500 rpms and then cuts down to 1000.  It won't run above 1500, just bogs.  Now the check engine light has come on.

Hello karen-- I would say that the check engine light on your 1994 Mercedes-Benz S320 is trying to tell you something. What it doesn't tell you is what the problem is. If your car were a human, the check engine light would be the headache and there could be numerous causes, like a cold, or the flu, or a brain tumor that will kill you in a week. I would advise you have a reliable mechanic hook up your car to a computer and see what codes come up, thus diagnosing the problem. It could be as simple as a filter or a sensor or it could be a complex problem. I would think you would want to find out soon with such a nice car. Good luck from Bovan.

It am almost certain that this is the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I've had the same problem and once changed worked just fine. You can buy one alot cheaper at NAPA (rebuilt original part) compared to the dealer.
