Hook up a manifold gauge set to see what your pressures are first off. Most likely it is just low on Freon and needs to be topped up but to get the best out of it you need to pull a vacuum on the system and make sure there is no moisture in the lines then refill it with the correct amount of Freon to little and the compressor will just cycle on and off every couple of seconds if there is any Freon in the system while on the other hand to much can cause damage to the ac compressor and if not damage it wont cool correctly. It should stay on for a while until the evaporator core cools down to the point of beginning to freeze then the sensor will shut off the compressor to prevent it freezing solid and begin to cycle on and off every couple of minutes or so.
