my headlights wont come on and the service engine light comes on

Check the fuses for the headlights. Get the codes read to see why the CEL is on. Write down the code number and post it here. Someone will break it down and advise probable cost effective solutions.

That service soon light with the little wrench won't give a normal scanner any codes. That light is tied to the body control module and it usually indicates an issue with the lighting system. My finances last car had no hibeams, the hi beams are fed 6volts and are used as daytime running lights. Whenever she put the car into gear the DRLs would come on. Since the high beams didn't work every time she put it in gear the service light would flash, if she turned on the regular headlights first the high beams never got used so it wouldn't detect the fault so it wouldn't flash. Long story done short story is once you fix your light issue that service light will go away. Do you know enough about electrical to try and diagnose this yourself?
