On cold mornings, my battery icon is red and the battery charging indicator is below 14. Why?

It just started the past few days. When I turn the car on, the icon for the battery is
showing up red.  And the battery charge needle indicator is below 14 (middle) position.

But the car is off. I do not put headlights on until car is started. How do I check if I have something pulling current?
